Steps of New Zealand Nursing Registration Process

Submit your application to the Credential Verification Service for the Nursing Council of New Zealand (CVS-NCNZ) through CGFNS International Inc.

As an authorised agent with a dedicated portal in CGFNS New Zealand, we will verify the authenticity of your employment history, personal identification information, and educational credentials through CGFNS International. This process ensures that your credentials and work history are genuine and compliant with NCNZ regulations.

Upon completion of the report, CGFNS New Zealand will then transmit it to NCNZ.

Following the assessment of the report, NCNZ will determine your registration status. Once this process is concluded, you will be eligible to apply for your Annual Practicing Certificate (APC). An email invitation will be sent to you by the Nursing Council of New Zealand, prompting you to submit your application within 30 days.

Your application will undergo assessment based on the 7 registration standards outlined by the NCNZ. These standards include:

1. Identity
2. Current Registration
3. English Language
4. Nursing Qualifications (Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or equivalent)
5. Post-Registration  Experience (minimum 2 years)
6. Fitness to Practice
7. Competence to Practice

At this stage, it is necessary to provide a criminal history check and affirm your eligibility for registration.

After your registration is approved, you are required to apply for your Annual Practising Certificate (APC). With this certificate, you are now eligible to practice nursing in New Zealand.

*APCs are issued annually based on an individual's birthdate. The renewal cost for your account is determined by the proximity of your birthday to the annual renewal date.

Revolutionizing Competence Assessment: New Zealand Nursing Council's Forward-Thinking Changes for International Nurses in 2023

The New Zealand Nursing Council is introducing changes to the competence assessment process for internationally qualified nurses, set to be effective in December 2023. This initiative follows a year of collaboration with stakeholders and communication in September 2022, which outlined the planned changes, incorporating feedback from the sector into the design and development. Internationally qualified nurses (IQNs) applying to the Council in December 2023 will, as directed by the Council, undergo the following objective examinations of competence: 1. An online theoretical exam assessing nursing knowledge, administered at an accredited exam center overseas or in New Zealand. 2. A two-day orientation and preparation course, followed by a clinical examination known as an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination). The 3-hour OSCE evaluates clinical and professional skills. The orientation, preparation, and OSCE will occur in person in New Zealand at an accredited center. How will these changes impact the sector? The Council foresees an 18-month transition period during which the new competence examination processes will be implemented alongside the existing Competence Assessment Programmes (CAP) available. For internationally qualified nurses, these changes will have no immediate effect if: 1. You have already applied for registration with the Nursing Council after verification of your documents (by CGFNS, an external agency). 2. You can apply, once your documents are verified, before the new process is implemented. For nurses who have yet to submit their documentation or have not been able to apply to the Nursing Council by December 2023, these changes will affect you."
